Tiffany lamps

Tiffany lamps were first created by Louis comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the inventor of a method that is still used today, namely, wrapping pieces of glass in copper foil and then soldering them together. Before that time, it was common to use lead to connect pieces of glass. Tiffany began experimenting with making coloured glass after he had gone on a trip to Europe. The stained glass windows of Chartres cathedral made a deep impression on him. He made it is his mission to combine art with the needs of everyday life.

Tiffany created all kinds of items for the interior of homes, but the Tiffany lamps became really famous. This was partly because the incandescent lamp had just been invented by Tiffany’s good friend Edison. The lamps usually had natural Art Nouveau shapes from the base till the lampshade.

Based on a design, small pieces of glass are cut out with the help of patterns and they are then soldered together by hand. This means that every Tiffany lamp is unique!
